Brave dancer Demi Kelly defies the odds and books place at Dance World Cup

A Wishsaw girl who was told she would never be able to dance again due to a life-threatening disorder has defied the odds to compete at the Dance World Cup next year.

Demi Kelly battles daily with the rare medical condition called Gomez and Lopez-Hernandez syndrome, which affects co-ordination and memory.

The 14-year-old was diagnosed earlier this year and given the heart-wrenching news she would never be able to dance again, having been dancing since the age of four.

Now her mum, Denise, has labelled her daughter a miracle and spoke of her pride as she gets set to compete for Scotland.

Denise said: “It was absolutely brilliant and an extremely proud mother moment when we found out Demi would be going to the World Cup.

“She was always determined to dance but has sometimes lacked the confidence to compete at tournaments. Now she is representing Scotland and it’s a dream for everyone.

“The support she has received has been brilliant and she’ll be travelling with the rest of the G12 Dance Group to the finals in Jersey next summer.”

It is the first time Scotland have qualified for the tournament and more than 18,000 competitors from 38 countries will take part in the championship.

Club coach Lyn Millar added: “We are very proud Demi and all of the G12 students and how hard they have worked throughout this process and training and they now have the rewards with their achievements.

“Demi can and will continue to achieve a lot with determination, hard work and belief.”
